Celebrating the Sun

For those of us with seasonal depression and suffering from lack of light, this is a day to celebrate.
The Return of the Sun!
Today is the winter solstice and the day with the shortest number of daylight hours in the year.  Also the longest night of the year.
But tomorrow the day will be longer!  Only by minutes, but over the next few months, those minutes add up to more Light!
I realize that the coldest, and possibly snowiest part of the winter is still ahead in January and February, but it sure makes me feel better to know that the darkness is now turning the other way.
So HORAY FOR THE SUN!!!

I want to thank all of you for your supportive comments on my last post about the winter blaaaahs.
Seems like a lot of people suffer from this malady and deal with it in many ways.  Thank you all for your suggestions!

I still haven't wanted to go out much, but I'm not feeling so down in the dumps.  Most of the Christmas parties are over and I bowed out of all of them.  Zip went to his pot luck dinner with his fellow music students and to his Sunoco luncheon by himself.  He doesn't mind going out and socializing and I like the time to myself.
We have a small quiet dinner planned with Mom on Saturday and are eating with Brad and Kami on Christmas Day.  That's it!  All I really want to do.

I've been sewing and knitting.  Never did start that Santa rug.
The sweater seems to be taking a looooong time.  There are so many times when I wish I were a size 6, and this is one of them!  The first sleeve is almost done and then only the other one to do and it's finished.  I wanted to have it done by Christmas, but that isn't going to happen.
After that, I have one to knit for Mom who is a size 0 or something.  That shouldn't take long.
And I want to plan a nice big rug, something to work on for months.  Or maybe work on some quilting.
So many projects, so little time!

Here's Deiter, asking you to remember to keep your furry companions safe during the holiday season!
Poinsettias are poisonous to cats and dogs (the ones in the picture are artificial!).  Tinsel can get caught in their intestines, as can pieces of ribbon and string.  There are so many exciting new things to play with that animals can get carried away and eat stuff that they shouldn't.  But Deiter says he hopes that pet parents will be generous with the appropriate kitty and dog treats.  Wishing all the furry ones a safe and happy holiday surrounded by the humans they love.

Hope all of you have a happy and relaxed Christmas, or whatever Holiday you celebrate.
Enjoy food, family, friends, and conversation!
Peace on Earth!

  1. Hi Pat, so glad to see your post, was just about to email you to see if you were okay.
Good to hear that the blues are over, mine too, have been getting some bits done and feel more like myself again.
I know what you are talking about with cats eating tinsel etc, Rupert is the worst at eating cotton and any tasty morsels he finds in the work room, I have to make sure I clear up each time.
That's a lovely picture of Dieter, would you mind if I copied it to my desktop, its so festive.
Well, hope you enjoy your couple of days, we are going to Penny on Christmas day and will be quiet on Boxing day, but thats fine.

  3. Hi Pat,
I was going to email you soon to see how you were! You have been in my thoughts so very much! Glad to see the Solstice is bringing you some new rays of hope! These short dark days are really something and I feel the same way much of the time. Although the thyroid med. is helping this year a little.

I hibernate much of the winter too and don't go out only for appoints and groc. Having my Mom next door is a great relief as she is a hibernator also.

I haven't got anything on the hooking frame right now either and it's driving me a little bit crazy..... soon I hope!

You and Zip and the fabulous kitty children have a safe and happy Holiday! May the sun shine her rays on your faces and hearts and fill your souls with joy and contentment!!!
    Big Hugs!!

  5. Pat - you made me giggle at the sweater comment - I know just what you mean - I think of the same thing when I'm packing to go somnwhere - if I was a size O (like your Mom - LOL) i could fit more in my suitcase! Anyway - Riley and I are sitting here and he's looking at Dieter's pic - I told him he's one kook kitty! Love that pic (could be a Christmas card!) Have a wonderful Christmas doing just what you want - Sounds great! THanks for the card also! It cheered me up!

  7. Pat, I'm so glad to read this post and to know that you are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm wishing you much sunshine and bright lights. It will be nice getting more light hours in the near future.

I'm suffering from a bad head cold and my visit is arriving for a couple of weeks tomorrow. I didn't even addressed my Christmas cards this year.
I'm glad that you are thinking of either quilting or hooking.

Take care, stay warm by the fire with your adorable kitties. HUgs. JB

  8. What a gorgeous photo ....and you are so right about cats and the dangers of plants and string and things ... Lilys are another danger and are so often in bouquets at Xmas. One of ours has been under the weather (Lucky) and then stopped eating ...I at first thought it was a reluctant hair ball but she had a severe infection of the womb ...in all it cost £400 ...meds and a total Hysterectamy ...hard to find at this time of year ...but you do 'cos you love them ...she is hating the collar to stop her chewing but I hope she is on the mend now.
Our fur babies share a large stocking of bits ...cant wait to see them having a play with new mice and balls.
I intend to have a relaxed Christmas and will enjoy it more than a hectic one. Son is over with the three little ones on the 27th ...they have been ill especially Ben so I hope they make it.
I send you fond wishes for the season ...enjoy it in the way you like best ...eating what you want when you want to ...hugs to you both xx

  9. I hope you have a wonderful calm holiday! I'm glad to hear you're doing a bit better, and I hope each day brings you joy, even in the smallest ways so your baskets, barrels, crocks, and bowls over flow with the abundance of it.
    Merry Christmas!

  10. So good to hear from you! Yes, we are going over the darkness hump...into the light! Now, if I could just get through the snow season. That pic of Dieter is wonderful...I agree, it would make a great card. I didn't buy poinsettias this year because of Sophie. I've been hooking and knitting and I can't wait until vacations starts tomorrow at 3pm!!
    Merry Christmas!
    Hugs,
    Courtney
