Light at the End of the Tunnel

My blogging has been less than faithful lately.
Nothing new seems to happen.
Last week was particularly bad, thinking that I'd be dragging this darned wound vac around forever.
And will spring EVER come???  Especially the last two days with snow flurries off and on and temps in the 30's.  Yuck!

The kitties don't seem to mind.
They just go about their lives, playing, eating, and sleeping.  Mostly sleeping.
In my chair....

On Zip's flytying desk....

And sometimes they are even good enough to share...

At the end of February I turned 66.
Instead of going out to eat, Brad and Kami brought the dinner makings to our house and cooked the birthday dinner.

It was a lovely meal of lemon and garlic marinated pork loin, asparagus (my favorite!), pureed cauliflower and a nice fresh salad.

We all enjoyed ourselves, even without birthday cake.
I requested fruit for dessert instead.

And yes, I'm still following my Weight Watchers food plan and have now lost 80 lbs.  Halfway to my goal!  I just wish I could get some exercise, but the doctors says not until the wound vac comes off.

On Monday he declared me ready for the skin graft.
This is what the wound looked like last week.  The funky colored skin is all the new growth.  To begin with the wound was about 1/4 inch deep.  It has now filled in up to the surface of my leg.

My leg looks wrinkled because over top of the dressing and the wound vac connection, they put several layers of gauze and elastic wrapping.

I took this picture yesterday after the graft has been on for three days.
The graft is already growing into the leg tissue.

The doctor will evaluate in two weeks and see if I need another layer of grafting.
I finally feel that the healing is moving along and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
These three-times-a-week wound clinic visits cramp my style!
Hopefully by the time the weather is warm, I'll be back to normal.

Then I will be ready to go to the thrift shops to get some new summer clothing.
Road trip, anyone???

  1. Happy Birthday to you!!!! Nothing better than a home cooked meal.. especially cooked by someone else and they do the dishes too! :-) Your kids are fabulous! That is one wicked wound you have there... keeping fingers crossed here that this first skin graft does the trick and you can move forward with Spring walks and sunshine!

You certainly have got the will power I wish I had ...although I did give up smoking ....maybe thats the problem ...I enjoyed it ...and I feel I'd be giving up my last pleasure.
I am glad you see a light at the end of the tunnel with your leg ....I remember my Mum having a large ulcer when she was only in her late 30's....and how long it took to heal. xx

  5. Hi Pat, and a HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to you. Unbelievable.... you already lost 80 pounds...WOW...That is amazing. Congratulations. I'm so happy for you.
I'm glad that the kids catered for your birthday. They are awesome and the food looks appetizing.

I'm glad that you updated your blog to give us news on how your poor leg is healing. Im glad that they could do a skin graft and I hope that it will heal fast. It's a good thing that you have your loving fur kids to keep you entertained while you wait for spring. Just hang in there. Spring is just around the corner.

I just turned 66 November 27 and I'm starting to slow down some. I have found this winter really depressing and I'm ready for spring and sunshine and a little scratching in the flower bed.

I'm still in Ottawa and will return home on Easter Day.
    Hugs and healing prayers,
    JB

  8. Happy Birthday belatedly! Pat you are an amazing woman of many talents, your family & assorted kindred furry friends love you, so much . I am amazed by your weight loss, and how well you have done. I admire you greatly. Praise the Lord your leg is healing, and the graft is doing so well. I hope the coming spring will bring lots of new growth and healing in your leg, new growth and brightness in your creativity, and new growth in bundles of flowers out doors , veggies on your table and purrs and paws in your lap from your Kitties. God bless you & Zip, and your children for taking such good care of you!
